Cleveland police see 45% increase in applicants since August

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The city of Cleveland said they are seeing continual success in police recruiting after new incentives were announced through their RISE initiative.
According to the city, they have seen an increase in applicants since August, giving them an optimistic outlook for future staffing.
As of October 11, the city said CDP has 1,211 total officers, with 1,498 officers budgeted.
Since announcing major pay increases and sign-on bonuses on August 23, there has been a 45% increase of applications, according to the city.
Between July 1 and Sept. 30, the city said they received 295 total applications.
- As part of the RISE initiative, the city is offering:
- A 50% increase in cadet salary from $16 to $24
- Reimbursement for Tri-C Police Academy
- Higher level entry: Cadets entering academy with a college degree or higher or active duty in the armed forces will enter at a higher level
- A $5,000 sign-on bonus
